Vocal Spiel is a one-woman vocal piece that plays with the sound of language - what might be above, beyond, or behind our dialogical exchanges. Spiel, taken from German, is a tricky word; it means ‘play’, ‘game’, ‘performance’ and ‘gamble’ all at once reflecting what will occur in this performance.
The piece gathers material from micro-situations observed in the everyday garnered through a process of eavesdropping in hairdressers, coffee shops, and pubs.
At the heart of the piece is the question as to whether we actually ever really communicate something of who or what we are, or whether we are always reduced and confined to niceties and small talk. Using a range of accents, rhythms, and repetitions, the piece intends to make you think twice about what might be beyond, above or below these habitual exchanges.
Vocal Spiel was performed at Volcano Theatre in Swansea as part of Garfan Yr Odyn, a self-organising community of Wales-based artists Open Studio event see http://www.volcanotheatre.co.uk/907/productions/garfan-yr-odyn.html and at Freshly Scratched at the Battersea Arts Centre on 5th February 2104.
