Re-Imagining Llanbedrog

Re-imagining Llanbedrog is a playful audio-based performance that uses oral histories and memories of a Welsh seasidetown.

Llanbedrog has been an important holiday destination for my family since the 1950’s. Not only my parents but also my grandparents and their parents spent almost every summer there – that is until I was born. After discovering numerous photographs of my family and of Llanbedrog beach life from the early 1950’s, not to mention a vast amount of kitsch picnic paraphernalia e.g. picnic basket, flask, and blanket I became curious and keen to explore the place for myself.

Armed with a crumbling plastic thermos and vintage bathing suit, I spent several days in Llanbedrog, discovering the beach and attempting to re-trace my families footsteps in the surrounding area.

Re-imagining Llanbedrog combines and uncovers fragments of a personal story, interlaced with accounts from the locals, layered with the history of a popular tourist resort. It not only provides a way to investigate place and peoples memories, but also re-imagines a families past and previous habits now no longer in existence.

An informal sharing of the work took place on Monday 12th May 2014 in Llanbedrog, at Beach Hut 18 .

On 28th and 29th May 2014 Re-Imagining Llanbedrog was performed at Aberystwyth Arts Centre.
